Q: How can you join the Ferndale Impi Robotics Team?

A:  Come to fall training meetings and ask to join. Alternately, email Ms. Mathews at elin.mathews@ferndaleschools.org

Q: What are the requirements to join the robotics team?
A: Good news–you are NOT required to be a genius! You just have to be a 7th-12th grade students attending either Ferndale Middle School or Ferndale High School. To attend competitions, you have to maintain a C or higher in every class and also meet a certain number of hours specified at the beginning of the season.
Q: How often does the robotics team meet?
A: The robotics team meets:
 Once a week during the fall teaching season
 Every day from kickoff to bag day (Jan.-Feb.)
 For competitions, beginning in March, which are on Fridays and Saturdays (students are excused from school on Fridays)

You are required to attend robotics every Monday (6 -8 p.m.) and Saturday (9 a.m.-3 p.m.) and an additional day during the week (3:30-5:30 p.m.) for a total of 60 hours.
Q: Does it cost money to join the robotics team?
A: No, it does not cost anything. Every Saturday, though, we have lunch together and
parents join together to provide lunch for the robotics team. Impi Robotics also does yearly fundraising (i.e. bottle drives, tag days, etc.) The team is funded by local businesses/companies including Ford, Chrysler/Fiat Automotive, Sapa, Schaeffler, etc.
Q: What is the competition schedule?
A: The schedule for the upcoming robotics competitions and Robotics Team meeting dates are posted on the IMPI robotics website at www.impirobotics.com.
Q: What kinds of jobs can you do if you join the robotics team?
A: You can join the Robot Build Team, CAD/Design Team, Safety Team, Programming Team, Electrical Team, Scouting/Rules Team, and Public Relations Team/Chairman’s. During competition season, you can either scout or be on the drive team serving as driver, buttons controller, or human player. There are more than enough jobs for anyone with interest!
Q: Do you get school credit for being a part of this?
A: No, but it looks great on college applications, and it also prepares you for careers in science, math and design. Plus, it’s a lot of fun!
Q: Do you have to work with any dangerous tools?
A: We work with power tools to build the robots (drill press, lathe, belt sander, chop saw, grinder etc.). Team members are trained in every tool safety before you use any tools, and are supervised by a teacher or mentor.
Q: Can I do robotics in addition to other activities?
A: Yes. Many of our students are part of other activities as well (i.e. theater, orchestra, Ferndale Independent Percussion, band, marching band, etc.). We will work with your schedule so you can follow all of your interests.
Q: How long has the robotics team been at FMS/FHS?
A: The IMPI Robotics Team has been around at FMS/FHS since 2007. We have competed since the 2008 season. We have won awards at most of our competitions.
Q: Is working for the robotics team a good way to earn scholarships for college?
A: While working for the robotics team does not guarantee you a college scholarship, FIRST offers over $14 million of scholarship money per year.
